The people that walked in darkness have seen a great light: they that dwell in the land of the shadow of death, upon them the light has shined. You have multiplied the nation, and not increased the joy: they joy before You according to the joy in harvest, and as men rejoice when they divide the spoil for You have broken the yoke of his burden, and the staff of his shoulder, the rod of his oppressor, as in the day of Midian.
Isaiah 9:2-4
Spiritual ignorance is a darkness that is worse than any physical darkness or blindness from which man can suffer. Such darkness can be brought about by one’s own choices but in some countries, it is the result of the oppression of tyrants and those who would destroy the opportunities of people to know the truth of God’s Word.
In some nations it is been against the law to own the Holy Bible; to tell the good news from it; and, if possible, for people to even think about its liberating words. When the control of the people becomes so tight than one’s every action is under the control of the government you can begin to imagine those people are suffering today.
However, the tyrants of those countries are finding out that it is impossible to control “the light.” The light of the gospel of Jesus Christ is penetrating the places where darkness has prevailed for years. The truth is that the light was never put out but just subdued until the time of the end.
Jesus quoted the verse above in Matthew 4:16,
“The people which sat in darkness saw great light; and to them which sat in the region and shadow of death light is sprung up.”
Remember the prophecy of Zechariah in Luke 1:78-79,
“Through the tender mercy of our God; whereby the dayspring from on high hath visited us, to give light to them that sit in darkness and in the shadow of death, to guide our feet into the way of peace.”
Jesus said in John 8:12,
“I am the light of the world: he that follows me shall not walk in darkness, but shall have the light of life.”
Jesus is the light that the darkness could not and cannot “comprehend,” that is put out. His light continues and it will shine brighter and brighter unto the “perfect day.” Let His light shine through you today and so dispel the darkness for someone who is walking in bondage of sin. Be the light to everyone you meet. Amen and amen.
