Why Sing?

Article written by Brother Bledsoe

I will sing of the mercies of the LORD forever: with my mouth will I make known Your faithfulness to all generations.  For I have said, Mercy shall be built up forever:  Your faithfulness shall You establish in the very heavens.
Psalm 89:1-2

Where did the song come from? Why sing? It did not come from someone who sat down and decided to write a song—not even David the sweet song writer of Israel.  God asked Job, “Where were you…when the morning stars sang together?” A long time before David wrote his song, it was God that gave the morning stars their song and it is God who puts a song of praise in the hearts of believers today. There are some songs that are truly inspired of God, and some that are not because they do not line up with the Word of God.

But we would be correct to join the Psalmist and sing of the mercies of the Lord as long as we have breath.  Let us make known the faithfulness of the Lord with the voice that God gives. Singing is a good way, even if we cannot carry a tune.

Why shouldn’t we sing?

We have received mercy from the One Who put a song in our hearts.  Why shouldn’t we sing for the faithfulness of God is established in the “very heavens?”

The Psalmist wrote that the faithfulness of God is established in the heavens. People have been looking into the starry night skies for centuries, searching for answers.  They wonder if there is life form somewhere up there.  We could tell them that there is, but they don’t want to believe what we have to say.  We know that somewhere up there is the “Heaven” and God’s throne is there and Jesus sits at His right hand but they don’t want to hear that either.  However, if they could just listen closely enough they might hear the melody of the stars or the harmony of the saints that are already there.  They might even hear the words, “Great is thy faithfulness O God our Father; morning by morning new mercies I see.  All I have needed thy hand hath provided.  Great is thy faithfulness, Lord unto Me.”

Did you awaken this morning with a song in your heart? Then sing His praises.  Your spirit will be lifted up when you do. Amen and amen.
